SCCM-Script to get some MDT Variables

Hi All, Every time when I go to customer to perform Operating System Deployment, customer always ask about MDT, so I’m here to try to clarify things: – MDT is a great tool, however, it only does OS Deployment, nothing else. It also only does LTI (or Little Touch) – SCCM does what MDT does and much more, it does application deployment, inventory, compliance, as well as OSD (LTI as well as ZTI – Zero Touch) But why there is always this talk?!?! For companies that do not have any tool that can do OS Deployment, MDT can be used. it is really easy to install and configure, in couple of hours you can have an environment ready to start deploying your 1st Windows. But remember what i said, for companies that do not have any tool that can do OS Deployment. If you have SCCM, MDT is not for…

Surface Pro 4 – USB boot issue without keyboard

Hi All, I’m currently engaged in a Windows 10 migration project. Customer is trying to remove all the infrastructure from the locations and because of this, there is no DP on the sites. A content provider like 1E Nomad would be a great solution for this customer, however, at the moment, they preferred to use an USB solution. The task sequence has been created to support this scenario as well as i have created some custom scripts to help with the deployment, so the deployment needs a network (not wifi) and USB. It has been great, until i had to test the deployment on a Surface Pro. As you can imagine, Surface Pro 4 only have 1 USB port, so how can I achieve the deployment on this scenario? if i use the USB port for the TS, i don’t have network. If i use it for the network, i…

SCCM Surface Pro 4 Domain Join Issues (Windows 10)

Afternoon, Had some fun and games whilst onsite with SCCM, Windows 10 and Surface Pro 4’s (SP4). I captured my reference image using MDT, downloaded the drivers from Microsoft, imported everything into SCCM, configured the task sequence and then the trouble started … I couldn’t find the Ethernet drivers for the SP4 so instead I used the Ethernet drivers for the Pro 3 to allow my boot image to start working. After the boot issues were overcome, the build finishes but the device wouldn’t domain join. On some occasions, the Ethernet dongle for the surface wouldn’t turn back on after a reboot and other times it did … So I managed to track down all the correct drivers I needed and re-created the boot.wim to get back on track, this time the Ethernet dongle stayed up after the reboots and I hoped that this would fix the domain join issues and it didn’t…

ConfigMgr: Automation from Zero to Hero

Hi All, Today is a great milestone for me because I just finished writing the ConfigMgr: Automation from Zero to Hero book. It is not under final review and should be available in the next couple of months. I have to thank David Nudelman, Heinrich Pelser and Panu Saukko for helping me to review and for their contributions as well as Dave Randall as without their help it would be much harder to finish it.

SCCM 2012 R2 PXE fails (WDS Crash)

Players, Last week I was asked to look into PXE boot issue that a friend of mine was experiencing, in his own words he explained that “PXE boots were working fine until” … he recently built a new Windows 2008 R2 box (No idea why he didn’t use 2012 R2 …). It wasn’t a boundary group issue, as this problem was intermittent. And was sometimes fixed reboot of the server. He passed over a bunch of log files, and the following error stuck out. Log Name: Application Source: WDSServer Event ID: 512 Task Category: WDSServer Description: An error occurred while trying to initialize provider WdsImgSrv from C:\Windows\system32\WdsImgSrv.dll. Since this provider is not marked as critical, Windows Deployment Services server will continue. As well as this … Log Name: Application Source: WDSIMGSRV Event ID: 258 Task Category: WdsImgSrv Level: Error Description: An error occurred while trying to initialize the Windows Deployment Services…

SCCM 2012 R2 – Driver Packages (Specific driver packages to specific devices)

Players, When it comes to driver packages and deploying Windows to multiple hardware variants using the same task sequence, every man and his dog has a way of doing it. Some of us like to be precise and other don’t mind how this is configured as long as all the drivers are on the DP and they get onto machines one way or another … So, lets pretend that we want to be a little more specific with drivers and we don’t like “Auto Deploy” as we have taken the time to create individual driver packages for each hardware variant. Here is some guidance on how to deploy specific driver packages to specific devices via the task sequence. 1. We need to know what the model name is for the specific machine/s first. So open command prompt (or PowerShell if you want to look cool) and type WMIC Computersystem GET Model you should get…

@Heinrich_Pelser SCCM 2012 R2 – Supported Hardware checks in Task Sequence

Players, Deploying Windows has fed my kids and put a roof over my head for a few years so its safe to say that I take it seriously. Sometimes I like to automate things and try to find the simplest way of doing stuff where possible. I don’t cut corners however. Never. But recently I’ve found a few who do. A few engineers I worked with (for a client) were specifically instructed to only build HP machines. I stress again ONLY HP. The reasons were political, but they chose to ignore this as they had all the drivers for their laptops, they continued to use the single task sequence and build just about anything they had drivers for. Needless to say, the managers were pissed off and they wanted to simply remove the task sequence and instructed me to create another, ready for production in 2 hours … Simple you say?…
