The Static State of Dynamism
Lets talk about I.T Professionals. They are my favorite type of person in the work place, some of the best times in my career have been shared with them. The reverse is also true. Please join me in the article, take a seat and from your own opinion.
You hear it all the time, whether its in a movie, a television advert or a friend parting with a piece of wisdom for your benefit. I’m talking about “quotes” or “proverbs” if you like. There are many such as “move with the times”, “fortune favors the brave” and “when in Rome”. OK, I stole that last one from Anchorman. But every now and again they tend to overlap, and contradict one another, “A word to the wise is sufficient” and “Talk is cheap” or, (this one is my favorite) “Don’t judge a book by its cover” and “Clothes make the man”. So with all that said and done, there is one that I do believe in, especially in my line of work. its this;
Complacency is the enemy of progress.
As a consultant Ive worked with some amazing companies. These organizations that have the capability of wholeheartedly embracing challenges and change with vigor. The reason they accomplish their goals and reach targets is simple, they have a certain state of mind. I’m not going to explain how these woman and men achieve success for their employers. Instead, I will provide you with insight into my experiences of how others fail and by applying simple logic you and your staff/colleagues can achieve success.
Ever been held hostage? I know someone who has, he came out of it without a scratch luckily. But sometimes these situations don’t have a happy ending and worse still sometimes you’re not even aware you’re the hostage. This is the case in organizations where I.T professionals use their “knowledge” as bargaining chips to negotiate and cite ludicrous reasons for I.T security, processes, SLA’s and reasons to why a project will fail. These individuals will sell you down the river for the cold side of the pillow and are often the road block that prevents useful changes from happening. They may be seen as the star player’s on the team, these ones with gifted brains that can grasp technical details at an instant. So now, two question. Ready?
Whats more important, technology or business goals? Its 2013 and these days one cannot exist without the other. But who drives the need for change, is it the business or the technology? If your answer isn’t business goals, I’m talking about you.
Back to my earlier explanation on the difference in mind sets between companies who achieve and well, those who don’t. How do we spot these individuals and what are the warning signs? In my experience when visiting floundering organizations the bad apples all share similar traits and for your peace of mind see if any of these sound familiar.
- Your end users have to configure/setup their applications. Lets face it, unless you’re in sales, you are a cost to the business, users shouldn’t have to put up with this, they are there to use the applications, not configure them. Now your costing the business time as well.
- Backups aren’t maintained, yes things go wrong once in a while and I understand they fail but Enterprise backup solutions are extremely clever these days. So if you ever lose a preposterous amount of data, you’ve made a career limiting move.
- Staff leaving and joining the company are handled by I.T professionals. If you, ever, as an I.T professional find yourself creating a user account, ask yourself, what is your HR department doing?
- I.T administrators that have zero understanding of Cloud technologies. Get training.
- Change Control Requests that take a week to get authorized. Just plain and simple delay for the purpose of delay.
- Software installations are done manually. You manually install software once, when you package it, the second time you deploy it, the third time you deploy it, the forth time you deploy it, the firth time you deploy it. Get the point?
- Administrators that say Direct Access is insecure. This is a lie. Its secure. Use it.
- VMware is better than Hyper-V. Change the channel, if your not having an intelligent discussion about how Hyper-V and VMware’s management tools differ, go home.
- Talking about the Windows 8 start button, its back in 8.1 can we move on? Things change, and sometimes they change back.
I’m not suggesting that people should be robotic and just follow processes all day long. And I’m also not suggesting that no-one is entitled to their own opinion, however the best embrace change.
The evidence is all around you, and its absolutely necessary that you do one thing to achieve. Evolve.
